The season of Epiphany begins January 6, 2011, after the 12 days of Christmas. Epiphany (meaning “appearance” or “manifestation”) celebrates the coming of the Magi to worship Jesus, Light of the world, after his birth. In doing so, the Magi became the first Gentiles to identify Jesus as King. It serves as a marker for the inclusivity of the Gospel for all people. The star that hangs from the front of the sanctuary reminds us of the star that first called the Magi to Jesus and calls us to worship the Light of the world that has come into our midst and called all people – Jew and Gentile – slave and free, man and woman – to the Light of the world.
